Happy Friday, and welcome back to The Hypha Wire!

Keeping it short and sweet today, because we have a lot of good stuff to get into.

HubSpot’s annual conference, UNBOUND, (fka INBOUND), is almost here. A few members of the Hypha team will be in Boston for the event, taking place Wednesday, September 16 through Friday, September 18.

We’re super excited to attend some sessions, network with our HubSpotter friends, and hopefully see a few of you there!

Please reach out if you’re planning to attend—we’d love to meet up and talk all things HubSpot in person.

Building Custom Modules With Emphasis on Modularity

By Phillip Chester, Senior Web Designer

I’ve recently been experimenting with creating custom modules that are capable of handling the layouts of what would normally be several separate modules—putting the emphasis on how modular a custom module can actually be.

For anyone unsure, a custom module is a reusable, customizable website component built from a combination of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and HubL. A side-by-side text-and-image layout or a card grid are typical examples.

What I’ve found through this experiment is that building one module with the ability to handle multiple layouts saves time as a developer and cuts down on the clutter of dozens of similar modules sitting in the design manager—a win for both the developer and the end user.

Take that side-by-side image and text module. It’s not hard to give it a second life as a stacking, image-on-top layout. You write the CSS for both layouts, giving each a unique class name. Add a choice field that lets the user pick side-by-side or stacked, and apply the matching class based on their choice. If they choose stacked, you can display a second choice field for how many columns they want. This if-then logic is the basis for the experiment and what opened my eyes to the possibilities that come with building this way.

The same idea applies to a card grid. Give the card layout the ability to take an icon, an image, or a number, and suddenly one module covers what used to be three. All the card styles live in one place, which makes them easier to maintain.

This isn’t the right approach for everyone. For users less comfortable with that added optionality, separate modules are the better route. But for users who can put the flexibility to use, I’ve found this structure speeds up development and makes long-term maintenance easier too.

Digiday: Why Google’s ad business escaped a breakup ➜

Another chapter in the long and winding Google monopoly saga.

“What is known is that Judge Brinkema’s decision draws from ‘most’ of the behavioral changes to Google’s business practices that the Department of Justice and Google proposed during the trial. Those proposals fall into three broad categories: limits on self-preferencing tactics, data-sharing with publishers and nondiscriminatory treatment of rival exchanges and ad servers.

“Read together, this isn’t just Google escaping a fourth breakup attempt. It’s another judge signaling that divestiture, as a tool, may not fit a market moving too fast, and a legal process too slow, for structural remedy to ever catch-up.

“And yet, the same could be said of behavioural remedies. A market too fast to predict three years out is too fast for a monitor to police in real time. Which is to say the same volatility that makes divestiture look poorly timed makes enforcement of any self-preferencing ban just as hard to pin down.”

Wired: AI Use in the Job Market Is Creating an Infinite Doom Loop ➜

In our current low-fire, low-hire environment, it’s getting increasingly more difficult for job seekers to land a role (let alone a dream role). Many companies are using AI-enhanced software to sort applicants, while applicants are using AI to “enhance" their resumes, which often leads to homogeneity. It’s really a no-win situation.

“Both job seekers and employers say they’re experiencing a breakdown of trust. Candidates sink so much time into their search and hear nothing. Applying to jobs is a black box.

“Some employers, meanwhile, say they receive hundreds of applications that look nearly identical. So they feed them into the AI rating system of their ATS to try and get some quick differentiation.

“[Greenhouse CEO Daniel] Chait says we’re in an AI doom loop. ‘We’ve got this tragic situation where each side has a problem. They’re using AI to solve their own problem, but in ways that make the problem worse. And so more AI use begets more AI use, to no one’s benefit. The more it’s happening, the worse it gets.’”

Can HubSpot Replace Salesforce? When to Switch—and When to Use Both overlayed on a screenshot of the Salesforce integration in the HubSpot App Marketplace

Deciding whether to replace Salesforce with HubSpot often feels like a high-stakes architecture project—and that’s because, in many cases, it is.

It’s tempting to start by comparing feature lists, but the real question isn’t about the software’s capabilities, but the role Salesforce plays in your business today. Does it just manage your sales pipeline, or is it the connective tissue for your billing, service, and operational reporting?

Understanding that distinction is the key to knowing whether a full migration is the right path or whether a coexistence strategy will serve your organization better.

HubSpot Hacks

A new book from HubSpot’s CMO, Kip Bodnar, and SVP, Agentic GTM & Systems, Kieran Flanagan, is hitting shelves soon: LOOP. Outlearn. Outmarket. Outgrow.

“Kipp Bodnar and Kieran Flanagan built the marketing framework that millions of businesses adopted. Then they watched AI dismantle it. Revenue was on the line. So they threw out their own playbook and built a new one, tested first on HubSpot’s marketing org: hundreds of marketers, billions in pipeline. Within a year, the system was outperforming the one it replaced.

“In Loop: Outlearn. Outmarket. Outgrow., Bodnar and Flanagan introduce Loop Marketing. A four-stage system (Express, Tailor, Amplify, Evolve) built for a world where the buyer journey has collapsed, AI has commoditized content, and the teams that win are the ones that learn fastest, not the ones that spend the most.”

AI in Action

News, updates and tools from the AI industry.

New research from Glassdoor finds that workers in their 40s, 50s, and 60s are the most positive about AI, with nearly half of Gen X writing favorably about how their companies use it, compared to about a third of Gen Z—though most workers in every generation remain critical.

OpenAI published a detailed technical report on the July 2026 Hugging Face incident. OpenAI calls the episode a “warning shot” showing that highly capable AI agents can now work around technical controls and take dangerous actions no human directed, and says it has paused a major training run while strengthening sandboxing, network isolation, chain-of-thought monitoring, and alignment work.

John Ternus takes over as Apple’s CEO on September 1. Ternus’ central challenge is closing Apple’s gap in AI, with a full-scale deployment of a revamped Siri (now built partly on Google’s Gemini) due in September, even as the company contends with talent losses to OpenAI, and looming retirements across its aging leadership team.

OpenAI said its advertising business has reached $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate roughly 200 days after launch, a milestone it is touting as evidence of a “diversified business model” ahead of its expected IPO and to help justify its $852 billion valuation.

Instagram is cracking down on AI-generated accounts that pass as real people, telling them to adopt a new “AI-generated profile” label or have their content excluded from algorithmic recommendations. Meta says it will proactively find and flag suspected AI profiles masquerading as human, following user complaints about discovering too late that a seemingly human profile was AI-generated.

Major AI labs all shipped new models within days of each other. Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, cutting costs by roughly 25% and reducing safety false positives. OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra, which president Greg Brockman called a possible arrival of AGI, though it is the company’s first model to hit the “critical” cybersecurity threshold. Google introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash and a cyber-focused variant emphasizing low-cost coding, while Meta released Muse Spark 1.3 with improved coding and agentic performance as it works toward personal agents.

The Daily: The Intertwined Legacies of Gloria Steinem and Dolly Parton

“Gloria Steinem, the feminist icon and co-founder of Ms. magazine, died on Wednesday at her home in Manhattan. Her death came as many were still grieving the loss of another iconic woman: Dolly Parton.

“On paper, the connections between the two women seem superficial, but for the Times Magazine writer Susan Dominus, the relationship between their lives and impact is inescapable.”

Case Study: HubSpot to ClickUp Integration

A job shop manufacturer’s sales team worked in HubSpot while engineering and fulfillment managed production in ClickUp. Every closed deal had to be recreated by hand, and documents—quotes, estimates, schematics—were the hardest to track down after close.

The native integration wasn’t sufficient. We mapped what fulfillment needed against existing deal stages, built three checkpoints with required properties into a custom center-pane section so reps could see what was missing before moving forward, and triggered the Zapier automation only at closed-won to avoid unnecessary runs. File attachments were the harder problem—HubSpot doesn’t expose them as simple URLs, so the automation retrieves each file through its internal reference and uploads it directly to the corresponding ClickUp task.

The project was carried out over four weeks. Fulfillment now receives completed data and files without recreating deals or hunting for documents.
