The Hypha Wire

Hey there folks!

Today, let’s chat about something close to our hearts at Hypha: making our websites accessible to everyone. You may be thinking, “Isn’t my site already open to all?” Not necessarily, if you haven’t taken the steps to get there.

Why Accessibility Matters

People often use the metaphor of visiting a store, excited to go in, only to discover there’s no ramp for your wheelchair. That’s the experience of many if your website isn’t accessible. By enhancing your site’s design infrastructure and content, you’re not just being inclusive (and doing the right thing)—you can reach a whole new audience.

Simple Steps for a More Accessible Site

  1. Think Beyond the Mouse: Can visitors navigate your site using just a keyboard?

  2. Alt Text is Your Friend: Add descriptive alt text to images. It’s like reading aloud what the image shows to someone who can’t see it.

  3. Contrast is Key: Make sure your text stands out from the background. It’s not just about looking good—it’s about being readable.

  4. Captions Aren’t Just for Instagram: If you’ve got videos, add captions. Your audience will thank you, especially when they’re watching with the sound off.

  5. Keep it Simple: Clear, simple language benefits everyone. Ditch the heavy jargon and embrace clarity.

The Bottom Line

Building an accessible website isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s good for business. You’ll reach more people, improve your SEO, and potentially even avoid legal action.

Remember, you don’t have to aim for perfection overnight. Start small, keep learning, and grow. Your efforts will go a long way.

Dale Bertrand, founder and president of Fire&Spark, gave a talk about mitigating the effect of Google’s Gen AI on SEO. He emphasized that not just creating new content, but making updates to existing content can help.

He also suggested that the AI weighs content that is unique as more valuable, so feeding your content to AI like ChatGPT and asking if the piece is unique can give you feedback.

HR Dive: National Hispanic Heritage Month: Why now ‘more than ever’ companies should celebrate ↠

NHHM takes place every Sept. 15–Oct. 15. As with other heritage and culture months, acknowledging the importance and history goes a long way in making your team members feel supported and recognized.

“According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Hispanic proportion of the workforce has increased from 8.5% in 1990 to 18.0% in 2020. By 2030, BLS estimates that Hispanics will account for 21.2% of the labor force, which comes to one out of every five workers. The bureau also projects that Hispanic workers will account for 78% of net new workers between 2020 and 2030.

“‘We are everywhere,’ said De Dios Woodward about Latino and Hispanic workers. That means that NHHM is ‘an opportunity to highlight and spotlight the contributions of Hispanics across the country,’ she said.”

Congressman Esteban Torres presenting to Congress in 1988 saying, I am both pleased and honored to today talk on a bill which would designate September 15 through October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month.

TechCrunch: LinkedIn scraped user data for training before updating its terms of service ↠

A little FYI for those that, you know, care about their personal data.

“LinkedIn may have trained AI models on user data without updating its terms.

“LinkedIn users in the U.S. — but not the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, likely due to those regions’ data privacy rules — have an opt-out toggle in their settings screen disclosing that LinkedIn scrapes personal data to train ‘content creation AI models.’ The toggle isn’t new. But, as first reported by 404 Media, LinkedIn initially didn’t refresh its privacy policy to reflect the data use.”

How to Decide If You Need a Custom Integration

As we’re all witnessing, tech stacks are growing increasingly more complex each year, with new apps built upon others. At the same time, APIs are doing their best to ensure everything flows together neatly.

When it doesn’t, your efficiency plummets. Data becomes corrupted or fractured. Team members get frustrated. And you begin losing customers.

What we’ve found is that out-of-the-box solutions from HubSpot can help. But sometimes you need a custom integration to establish a seamless connection between your various applications and software systems.

This guide will help you determine whether you should go with a custom integration or choose a standard fix.
