Hi there! Welcome back to The Hypha Wire.

Whether we like it or not, the holiday season is here. Somehow it creeps up every year! Rather than discussing the stress of gift buying or end-of-year closes, let’s take a look at the upside of the holiday season, and how you can make the most of it.

Holiday breaks are a perfect time to pause, refresh, and reset for the year ahead. Whether you’ve had a whirlwind 12 months or a steady pace, taking time to recharge can make a world of difference.

Start by Unplugging
Take a break from constant notifications and screen time. Even a few hours of disconnecting each day can help you feel more present and grounded. Use this time to reconnect with loved ones and yourself through quiet reflection.

Reflect and Reassess
As the year winds down, reflect on your accomplishments and lessons learned. What worked well? What didn’t? Use these insights to set goals for the new year.

Prioritize Self-Care
The hustle of daily life can wear you down. During the holidays, make rest and self-care a priority. Whether it’s sleeping in, indulging in a favorite hobby, or simply enjoying the peace of a cozy day at home, these moments of restoration will energize you.

Plan with Purpose
While relaxing, carve out a little time to outline your goals for the coming year. A clear plan can inspire you and set the stage for success.

This holiday season, give yourself the gift of renewal. You deserve it.

Beyond Google: Why Perplexity Is Changing the Game for Content Developers

By Jeffrey Howard, Senior Inbound Content Developer, Hypha HubSpot Development

May 2023 marked a pivotal moment in search engine history.

Google, the longtime king of search, rolled out AI-powered summaries at the top of search results, and content marketers collectively held their breath. Would our carefully crafted content become digital wallpaper, forever hidden behind AI-generated snippets?

Spoiler alert: The content apocalypse didn’t happen.

Instead, we’ve entered an era where AI tools aren’t replacing content creators—they’re making us better at what we do. And speaking of better tools, let me introduce you to the one that’s completely transformed my research process: Perplexity.

What Makes Perplexity Special?

Think of Perplexity as what search should have been all along—an AI-powered engine that actually understands what you’re asking and pulls together comprehensive answers from multiple reliable sources. It’s like Google evolved into something more sophisticated, more precise, and dare I say, more helpful.

(Quick disclaimer: This isn’t sponsored content. I’m just genuinely excited about a tool that’s making my job easier.)

Why I’ve Made the Switch

1. Context Is Everything

While Google gives you what you ask for, Perplexity gives you what you need. It reads between the lines of your queries and understands the broader context of what you’re trying to learn. The result? More relevant, more useful information right out of the gate.

2. Synthesis, Not Just Search

Instead of making you piece together information from a dozen different tabs, Perplexity creates comprehensive summaries that pull from multiple credible sources. It’s research efficiency at its finest.

3. Conversation That Flows

Unlike traditional search engines, Perplexity remembers your previous queries and builds on them. Each follow-up question leads to deeper, more nuanced insights without having to restart your search from scratch.

4. Information Without Overload

In a world of endless content, Perplexity excels at cutting through the noise. It presents curated, relevant information that saves you from drowning in a sea of semi-relevant search results.

5. Academic Excellence

This is huge for content developers working in specialized fields. Perplexity handles complex academic and technical queries with remarkable precision, prioritizing peer-reviewed sources and recent publications over commercial content.

6. Data That Makes Sense

One of its standout features is how it handles data. Statistics, quotes, and key findings are extracted and presented in a way that’s immediately useful for content development. No more endless scrolling through PDFs looking for that one perfect stat.

Keeping Perspective

Let’s be clear: Google still has its strengths. When it comes to local search, breaking news, or finding specific websites, it remains unbeatable. The key is knowing when to use each tool.

I’ve been using Perplexity for the past month, both on desktop and mobile, and it’s fundamentally changed how I approach research. Whether I’m diving deep into client projects or fact-checking general information, it’s become my go-to research companion.

The best part? The more you use it, the more you discover what it can do.

Here’s my suggestion: Next time you start research for a blog, run the same query through both Google and Perplexity. Notice the differences in:

  • Depth of information
  • Source quality
  • Time spent finding what you need
  • The overall usefulness of results

Looking Forward

As AI continues to reshape the content landscape, tools like Perplexity aren’t just changing how we find information—they’re elevating the entire field of content development. We’re entering an era where the quality of our research directly impacts our ability to create standout content.

If you haven’t tried Perplexity yet, give it a shot. Start with a complex query that would typically require multiple Google searches. See how it handles the nuances of your request. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Need clarification? If you have more questions, you can always “Perplexity it.”

Share your experiences with AI research tools! How are you adapting your content development process for this new era?

New York Times: U.S. Proposes Breakup of Google to Fix Search Monopoly ➜

The Department of Justice’s long-awaited proposal to remedy Google’s illegal search monopoly was delivered to the federal judge who ruled on the antitrust case earlier this year. Among the recommendations: The DOJ wants Google to sell off its Chrome browser, which would have significant implications across the internet. Whether the judge will endorse all, some, or none of the government’s recommendations, including ending Google’s incredibly lucrative search engine default deals with the likes of Apple, remains to be seen.

“The Justice Department and a group of states asked a federal court late Wednesday to force Google to sell Chrome, its popular web browser, a move that could fundamentally alter the $2 trillion company’s business and reshape competition on the internet.

“The request followed a landmark ruling in August by Judge Amit P. Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that found Google had illegally maintained a monopoly in online search.”

The Drum: Jaguar rebrand a complete comms car crash ➜

ICYMI, Jaguar has rebranded and people are pressed. (GIF below is clipped from the announcement video.)

“The reaction has been swift and overwhelmingly negative. Industry experts have labeled the launch as one of the most bizarre automotive media events they’ve ever witnessed. CarDealer magazine didn’t mince words, calling it ‘possibly the most bizarre automotive media launch I’ve ever attended.’ When your relaunch leaves people questioning whether it’s an April Fool’s joke, it’s a clear indicator that something has gone horribly wrong.”

Semrush: We Studied 200,000 AI Overviews: Here’s What We Learned

How common are Google’s AI Overviews (AIO)? What industries do they most target? What questions cause the Overviews to appear?

There are a lot of unknowns about the Overviews, but Semrush has gone to great lengths to study the behavior of them, what they mean for you, and their current impact on search.

Here are a few key takeaways they shared:

  • Low Volume Keywords: 82% of desktop and 76% of mobile AIOs occurred for keywords with less than 1,000 monthly searches

  • No Ranking Guarantee: Top 10 organic rankings didn’t ensure AIO inclusion

  • Response Length Varies: Responses ranged from 5 to 488 words
